God Is in Trouble: Finding God in the Depths, the Flow, and the Fire is a short theological reflection on Isaiah 43:2 and the question, “Where is God when we are in trouble?”
The book argues that God does not remain distant from human suffering but enters into our struggles through divine solidarity. Using the images of waters, rivers, and fire, it explores how God's presence protects us in the depths, steadies us in the currents of life, and transforms us through the fires of adversity.
Rooted particularly in the experiences of Black people in America, Guyana, and the broader African Diaspora, the book connects biblical exile to contemporary racism, displacement, inequality, and oppression. Yet its message is ultimately universal: trouble may shape our journey, but it does not have the authority to define who we are.
Through the story of James, a young Black man who overcomes systemic barriers and becomes a civil rights lawyer, the book illustrates what it means to move through adversity without letting it have the final word.
At its heart, God Is in Trouble is a theology of presence, resilience, liberation, and hope. Its central declaration is simple:
We may be in trouble, but we are never alone. God is with us, in the depths, in the flow, and in the fire.
And perhaps the book's most provocative theological claim is this: God is not merely waiting for us on the other side of our suffering. God is present in the suffering with us.
