The God Who Sees: Recovering Our Sight in a World That Has Stopped Looking

You haven't stopped caring. You've stopped seeing.

You feel it at the dinner table that used to be full and isn't anymore. You feel it scrolling past faces that have become categories, arguments, obstacles. You love your faith but flinch at the contempt spoken in its name. Or you left faith behind and still can't shake the hunger for something that tells you a human life actually matters. Either way, you know the distance is growing, and every prescription you've heard, be more civil, find the center, try harder, dissolves the moment it meets a real conversation with a real person you've lost.

The God Who Sees makes a different diagnosis. Matthew C. Gee, writing from years in healthcare, behavioral health, marriage, and family life, argues that our crisis is not disagreement. It is unseeing. We have learned to look directly at one another without recognizing what we are looking at. Drawing on Scripture from Hagar's wilderness to the encounters of Jesus with people at the margins, Gee traces an ancient claim: every human face carries an image no failure, no tribe, and no election can revoke. And he offers a path back to sight that asks nothing less than everything.

Inside these pages you will discover:

- Why contempt, not conflict, is the real threat to faith, family, and public life

- How the biblical story reframes human worth as something no one can earn and no one can lose

- Practical ways to recover genuine seeing at your own table, in your own home, and across the hardest divides in your life

Matthew C. Gee is a healthcare leader, author, and advocate for people too often overlooked by the systems meant to serve them. He serves as Vice Chair for Administration in the Department of Psychiatry at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and as Director of Operations within the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Behavioral Health Service Line. His career has spanned finance, operations, and healthcare administration, with behavioral health representing a more recent chapter in a much broader professional journey. It is that journey, moving through boardrooms, hospital intake forms, and two a.m. emergency rooms, that shapes his conviction: the people we stop seeing are the people we stop serving. In The God Who Sees, Gee turns that conviction into a book for two readers at once: the Christian troubled by contempt spoken in the language of faith, and the skeptic who has watched religion behave badly in public. Drawing on Scripture, behavioral health, marriage, and family life, he traces how unseeing, not mere disagreement, has become our deepest cultural crisis. The book is not a plea for centrism or vague kindness. It is an invitation to hold firm convictions and genuine regard together, to name what is wrong without declaring a person worthless. He is also the author of Roots Before Branches. When he is not writing or working, Matthew treasures time with his family in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Together they love to camp, travel, and enjoy slow, lazy days at home, never losing sight of the many gifts God has given them. He is also an avid football fan.Follow Matthew's journey at matthewcgee.com.
