Feldmann, a journalist and theologian, orginally published this book in Europe in 1984; here it is newly translated and abridged. Feldmann outlines seven saints and describes the ways in which they did not conform to the world around them. He reveals seven individuals, sometimes thought insane and often persecuted, through historical truths. Thomas More, a believer in following his conscience, went to his death forgiving his executioner and maintaining his opinion and humor. Catherine of Siena, champion of human rights, unleashed a torrent of letters trying to defuse warring factions. Francis of Assisi, champion of the oppressed, freed himself from consumption and sought equality in all things. By not living with hypocrisy, violence, or money, these saints were rebels for the church. Feldmann effectively challenges our need to conform and be obedient to be Christian, and his work is historically sound.
