The God's Part-Time Job in Japan

The God’s Part-Time Job in Japan

In a quiet neighborhood somewhere in Japan, there is a small, slightly run-down convenience store that stays open later than all the others.

Most people don’t think much of it.

But the night shift worker… is a god.

Not a grand, all-powerful deity of legend—just a minor, nearly forgotten god from an old shrine that no one visits anymore. With fewer prayers and no offerings left to sustain them, they’ve had to find a different way to survive in the modern world.

So now, they work part-time.

Stocking shelves. Greeting customers. Heating late-night meals.

At first, it seems almost ordinary—until the customers begin to notice small, impossible things. A lost item suddenly reappears. A worried student receives exactly the advice they needed. A tired worker leaves feeling strangely lighter, as if a burden has been quietly lifted.

Each shift becomes a quiet act of kindness, as the god uses their fading powers in small, meaningful ways.

But as time goes on, a difficult question begins to emerge: what happens to a god when they are no longer remembered? And can small acts of care be enough to keep something ancient alive in a world that has moved on?
