Undated. The book is bound in deeply embossed cloth with the title on a gilt frame on the front cover. Publisher's "Household Edition". The hinge is cracked at the preface, but the binding is firm. Corners and spine caps are bumped. Decorative endpapers.There is scribbling in pencil on pp. 14,15,42,43,p 75 and p.108. Line of staining on the fore-edges. Frontis portrait of Goethe with tissue guard. Period signature of a previous owner dated 1890 on verso of frontis. Otherwise, pages are age-toned smooth and unmarked. 424.
