Print on Demand. This book explores the figure of Goethe as a complex religious thinker. It positions his religious ideas against the backdrop of 18th-century thought, marked by a clash between rationalism and emotional, mystical belief. Despite his many skeptical outbursts, the author argues that Goethe's writings reveal a deeply religious core. In particular, he focused on a Gnostic-like dualism, in which the material world is seen as inferior to the spiritual realm. In Goethe's view, this divide could only be bridged by an act of individual, mystical revelation. The author demonstrates how these ideas find expression throughout Goethe's literary works, particularly in Faust. Thus, this book prompts us to examine Goethe's enduring significance as a guide for navigating the tension between religious doubt and belief in the contemporary secular world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
