New York: Harry N. Abrams, 2000. Hardcover. Wade Hampton Golf Club edition. Dark green linen over boards with gilt lettering to front and spine. As New book in an As New jacket. Pristine inside and out. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. 200 + viii pages. Lavishly illustrated with color photos. "Golf shouldn't be overly difficult, but it shouldn't be easy." says Tom Fazio, who believes that the classic tension in golf course design is not between risk and reward, but between playability and difficulty. His genius for designing memorable courses, ones that give pleasure over time regardless of a player's skill, places him among the premier golf architects of our time. His inner vision, combined with a grasp of the forms and settings of nature, give his courses a universal appeal. In this beautifully illustrated book, Tom Fazio shows golfers the inner workings of a master golf designer's mind. It is not a technical book, though much valuable technical information can be found in the appendices. Most of the things he talks about are based on common sense and practical experience gained over a period of thirty-five years, and they are presented in clear and easy-to-understand fashion. Fazio does not believe in shortcuts or excuses, only results, and those results can be seen in the magnificent photographs provided by the team of John and Jeannine Henebry and other fine golf photographers. This is a book that will help any golfer better understand how to read a course and how to play it. Fazio accomplishes this by explaining the process by which he creates each hole, and the philosophy behind his designs. Tom Fazio's courses have won numerous awards and this book shows why, in eloquent words and memorable pictures. Contents: Foreword; Golf design todays: great expectations; A century of design: follow the economy; A Featured Design: Wade Hampton; Design preferences: playability; Elements of design: variety and aesthetics; Appendices; Index.…

Review
Using his own designs as his laboratory, Fazio, through text and pictures, unveils the mystery of his methods and the ways in which technology has affected changes in golf course architecture through the 20th century. As difficult as Fazio's courses can play, he emphasizes that his intention isn't to punish golfers--though he has no problem with punishing bad shots--but to inspire golfers by providing a fair test of skill, whatever a player's skill level, in the most dramatic setting possible. To that end, he explains how he routes a course, where and why he sets bunkers and hazards, how he frames a hole for aesthetic appeal, how he sets greens and tees, when he leaves the landscape as he finds it, and why he brings in bulldozers to move what nature didn't provide to his liking.
"The classic tension in golf course design as I see it," he writes, "is not between risk and reward, but between playability and difficulty.... Even if a client wanted to build the toughest course around, I would argue that it should be fair." A golfer who can learn to use each hole's inherent fairness to advantage is a golfer who can post better scores. And, in the end, that's the most important secret Fazio's attractive volume reveals. --Jeff Silverman
