Advice from gurus on how to play better golf abounds, but how effective has it been for you? Have you been overwhelmed by tons of material that either you didn't have time to implement, didn't really work, or could at best be described as producing "limited success"? Maybe it's time for a new perspective. Here's advice from "one of you", a non-professional, non-teacher, who has personally experienced and been particulary observant about what works and what doesn't for us "mortals", the majority of golfers who love the game but can't play it at the highest level. These tips come from the perspective of what HAS worked for at least one student (himself), not what a teacher claims IS SUPPOSED to work assuming you had the time, resources, and energy to implement it. If you're hung up on trying advice only from those with big names and unimpeachable credentials, look somewhere else. But if you believe experience is a great teacher and want to improve your golf game, perhaps dramatically, with no expensive lessons, no hours on the range, and no investment in new equipment, this is for you. Try it. There's a great chance this book will help you, but hey, if it doesn't do any good at all? Well, at least after it takes the country by storm and is the talk in all the golf circles, you can be knowledgeable of the concepts, a part of the conversation, and praise or bash as you see fit. You'll have another conversation piece and can't be any worse off than from reading all those other books that didn't help much!! I'm an avid golfer and a bit of a student of the game. I've read lots of books, articles, and tips about how to play better. I'm a decent but not particularly talented athlete, and have become what most people would consider a decent, maybe even good, golfer shooting mostly in the high 70s and low 80s.
Over the years, I was struck by how much of what I read didn't really sound completely wrong, but it also didn't seem to do much good. Eventually, I settled on a fairly limited set of principles that I think DO work.
As a "better" player where I play, people listened to me as I talked about this concept or that strategy that I developed over the years. And I started getting some good feedback, with several people honestly saying that the principles really worked and had improved their game.
So, perceiving a gap in existing books (ever seen anything from the perspective of the student?) and encouraged by the fact that my pontifications had been well received, I thought I'd take a shot at sharing my thoughts with a wider audience. Remember, I don't claim to be an expert or the guru - I just want to share the learning that has worked for me as a student.
The most important aspect of this author's bio is that I've spent a lifetime playing with people just like you, have experienced and observed the same golf frustrations, and have faced the same struggles. I've had some success and think I can help bring it to you, too.
