(price-clipped) [very light wear to the extremities, a nice solid copy; jacket has an itsy-bitsy chip at bottom of front panel, small tear at lower rear hinge, another small closed tear and associated creasing at bottom of rear panel]. (B&W photographs) "A complete course of instruction by the greatest names in golf," an anthology of previously-published pieces on all aspects of the game. The greatest of the great names, of course, was Ben Hogan, represented here by an excerpt on "Clubs--Selection and Use" from his book "Power Golf." What makes this particular copy of this not-especially-rare golf tome notable is the inked gift inscription on the ffep, which reads: "To Bill - our / dear friend from / The Hogans / Xmas '64." The handwriting *somewhat* resembles numerous examples of Ben Hogan's autograph, although I strongly suspect that this inscription was actually written by Valerie (Mrs. Ben) Hogan; it's just the sort of thing that a faithful and dutiful wife would write, representing the couple when the famous husband couldn't be bothered to pick up a pen himself. (Or maybe that's just the sort of thing he preferred to delegate to the Mrs., since there's plenty of evidence that he was not, himself, a reluctant signer of autographs.) (The provenance of the book, unfortunately, sheds no light on who the recipient, "Bill," might have been.) While this obviously isn't as cool as a book signed by Hogan himself would be, I think a reasonable case can be made for Valerie as a kind of "celebrity golf wife," given that she's probably the only famous golfer's wife to have been portrayed in a major Hollywood movie (by Anne Baxter in the 1953 biopic FOLLOW THE SUN, opposite Glenn Ford as Hogan). She was married to Hogan from 1935 until his death in 1997 and, as depicted in the movie, supported him faithfully through all his travails, including their near-fatal car accident in 1949. …

Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. We grade our books conservatively (Fine being our highest grade, used only for books with no discernible flaws) and package them liberally: most hardcover books are sent in boxes, securely wrapped and cushioned, and with the dust jacket (if present) protected by a new mylar cover. We provide a concise, accurate description of the condition of every book (and a scanned image of the actual book on offer); please get in touch by email if you need additional information. All books are returnable for a full refund if not A-OK.
Shipping terms
We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book. Our first priority always is TOP-QUALITY PACKAGING, for MAXIMUM PROTECTION of your book, and we will never compromise on this point.
