About the Author
Mel Lewis, PGA. Mel's family background in golf goes back generations. Most golfers will recognize some of his famous golfing ancestors:
Allan Robertson, Golf's First Professional
"Old Tom" Morris and his son "Young Tom Morris". Both British "Open Championship" winners. Legends in their own right
David "Auld Daw" Anderson, also a St. Andrews golfing legend
Jamie Anderson three times British "Open Champion" 1877-1878-1879
Also Mel's great grandfather David Anderson, whose club-making company, D. Anderson and Sons, exported thousands of golf clubs and balls from St. Andrews, Scotland, to the United States of America from 1893 into the 20th century
These three families of Robertson, Morris and Anderson are described today as the "Greatest of Golf Dynasties".
Mel served a five-year apprenticeship as a maker of handmade golf clubs, becoming the last family member in five generations of Anderson clubmakers.
He became a member of the Professional Golfers' Association of New Zealand in 1969. In 1976 he was elected President of the Sports Dealers' Federation of New Zealand.
From 1993 until 2007 he was the Golf Tournament Director at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana, California. A popular Los Angeles venue for many hundreds of Charity Fundraiser Golf Tournaments.
