The Good Conscience is Carlos Fuentes's second novel. The scene is Guanajuato, a provincial capital in Central Mexico, once one of the world's richest mining centers. The Ceballos family has been reinstated to power, and adolescent Jaime Ceballos, its only heir, is torn between the practical reality of his family's life and the idealism of his youth and his Catholic education. His father is a good man but weak; his uncle is powerful, yet his actions are inconsistent with his professed beliefs. Jaime's struggle to emerge as a man with a "good conscience" forms the theme of the book: can a rebel correct the evils of an established system and at the same time retain the integrity of his principles?

About the Author
Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was one of the most influential and celebrated voices in Latin American literature. He was the author of 24 novels, including Aura, The Death of Artemio Cruz, The Old Gringo and Terra Nostra, and also wrote numerous plays, short stories, and essays. He received the 1987 Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honor.
Fuentes was born in Panama City, the son of Mexican parents, and moved to Mexico as a teenager. He served as an ambassador to England and France, and taught at universities including Harvard, Princeton, Brown and Columbia. He died in Mexico City in 2012.

Please send cash, check, or money order to my PO Box or physical address, or you may pay online with your credit card using the ABE Commerce purchase option, or via PayPal at www.paypal.com specifying payment to my email address. For PayPal-purchased books under $10, I request an additional fee of $0.50 to offset the transaction fee that PayPal charges me. Overseas PayPal customers may make payment in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling, or Euros after factoring the appropriate conversion rates.
Sales tax of 8.125 is charged on shipments to California addresses.
To guarantee delivery of books, buyers should request and pay for postal insurance. This costs $1.30 for the first $50 of coverage, $2.20 for $100 of coverage, plus $1 additional for each additional $100 of coverage. Insurance is not available for international orders unless shipped via parcel post, which itself costs additional.
Please note that a listed book may have been sold to a prior buyer and not yet removed from the database. I will hold books for 10 days while awaiting payment.
If you wish to see a photo or scan of any book, I can email an electronic image to you. However, this may take extra time.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you place an ABE Book Order without specifying payment type, please be aware that the book is automatically removed from the online database when you do this, and thus you will no longer find the book online afterwards. If you later decide you wish to pay for your order by credit card, please contact me via email and I will restore the book to the online database so that you may find it online to order and pay for it using the ABECommerce option.

Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, I may contact you to let you know that an extra shipping cost may be required.
