Nan Weitzman is an award-winning writer who holds the distinction of having taught a Bouvier des Flandres to play football and obedience-trained her horse. She traces her long-standing love of dogs to the happy times she spent helping her grandfather care for his champion field trial dogs. He raised and trained Brittany Spaniels, German Shorthaired Pointers, English Setters, English Pointers, and a rare European pointing bred, the Barque D' Auvergne. Weitzman competes her Irish Wolfhounds and American Staffordshire Terriers in obedience trials and conformation dog shows. All four of her pets are also registered therapy dogs. An accomplished horsewoman, she has been breeding horses for over seventeen years. She owns Quarter Horses and American Paint Horses, which she exhibits in reining competitions. Weitzman is the president of the Responsible Dog Owners Association (RDOA), a national organization dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership and fighting discriminatory dog laws. She founded the organization in 1987. Her goal is to educate every dog owner to be a responsible caretaker. As she frequently says, "A poorly behaved, ill-mannered pet is everyone's problem." She helps educate the public through radio and TV appearances, and with a regular column in Good Dog! Magazine. She has also created the Responsible Dog Owner's Guide (RDOG), a complete course for community education. It is now being taught throughout the U.S. Weitzman earned her undergraduate degree in Animal Science at Washington State University. She has a graduate degree in Education (Instructional Training Design) from Penn State University and is working on her doctoral degree in Equine Immunology.
