The Gotten

No one knew about the doorbell until the news story of the boys' mysterious disappearance.

In the year 1959, Astrid Sims is a 13-year-old British-American girl living in a midwestern U.S. city. Searching for the right friends, she is drawn to a group of boys and their treehouse, and promises them they can see their future if they install a doorbell.

Unbeknownst to the boys, Astrid is Skuld, an ancient Norse weaver of the future, fate, and destiny of humankind, who escaped into a new childhood existence. She is pursued by Ivor and Inge Borg, who seek to control her power and decide the fate of all human beings. To elude them, she takes the boys with her into their futures.

This literary YA masterpiece explores the important underlying theme of how decisions we make today impact our future, and how children and adults experience magic, power, and fate.
