About this Item
Publication: London, Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, c. 1860. Formatting: 12mo. Condition Report: Fair. The original blind-stamped brown cloth binding is notably worn, with a significant split along the front joint that exposes the underlying mull, though the boards remain tenuously attached. The spine ends are heavily chipped and frayed, and the corners are bumped from heavy shelf-wear. Internally, the text block remains relatively tight and legible; however, there is moderate foxing and toning present, most noticeably to the frontispiece and title page. The charming frontispiece dial remains intact. Catalogue Note: This is a "New Edition" of the popular educational work, revised, corrected, and greatly enlarged by Edward Hughes, Head Master of the Royal Naval Lower School, Greenwich Hospital. The title page does not bear a printed date; however, the publisher's specific imprint, Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, was active only between 1859 and 1862, securely dating this printing to approximately 1860. The volume is notable for its charming engraved frontispiece, which features a geographic time dial (displaying times across the globe relative to London) surrounded by allegorical figures and cherubs. As a heavily used schoolbook, surviving copies in any condition are relatively uncommon on the open market, offering an authentic artifact of 19th-century British education. A fascinating Victorian educational text, A Grammar of General Geography offers a comprehensive overview of the world as understood in the mid-19th century. Originally penned by Sir Richard Phillips under the pseudonym Rev. J. Goldsmith, this edition has been notably expanded by Edward Hughes to keep pace with the rapidly changing geographical and political landscape of the era. Designed for schools and young learners, the book is enriched with maps and engravings, providing a captivating window into historical pedagogy and the Victorian worldview.
