First published in early 1842 this was one of the first books to compare and explain the language of the Maori race, and the different tribal dialects, for English settlers. The author , a missionary had considerable contact with the Maori after arriving in 1836. At the time when his "Grammar." was first published he was recognised as the leading scholar on the Maori language. This fourth edition of 1894 contains 20 chapters defining different aspects of the language. 162 pages followed by two pages publisher's list of other works relating to NZ. Blue-gray paper covered heavy card covers with black front/spine titles VG with light wear to edges/corners, FFEP may have been removed and front cover has been re-glued at gutter to front pastedown/half-title. It is also possible there was no FFEP as both half -title and RFEP have shadow cause by the fold-over of the paper covering to both boards. The text block is clean and excellent.
