Grammatical and Logical Analysis of the English Language: for the Use of Grammar Schools, High Schools, Normal Schools and Academies

Grammatical And Logical Analysis Of The English Language: For The Use Of Grammar Schools, High Schools, Normal Schools And Academies by Harris Ray Greene is a nineteenth?century educational treatise that presents a two?part framework for teaching English grammar through the lens of both grammar and logic. Greene argues that traditional grammar texts mis-treat language by focusing on isolated words rather than larger units such as phrases, clauses, and sentences, and by conflating grammatical form with logical content. He advocates a pedagogy in which syntax is developed before finer details, and where grammar and logic occupy distinct but complementary provinces. Part I, Grammatical Analysis, defines significant, connective, and relation words, and then classifies Substantive, Predicative, and Attributive terms, with thorough discussion of word?forms, phrase?forms, and clause?forms. Part II, Logical Analysis, introduces the three fundamental offices of logical elements—Substantive, Predicative, and Attributive—and explains their Forms (word, phrase, clause) and their function in propositions. The work includes exercises and a recapitulation, reflecting 19th?century aims for grammar schools and academies.
