About this Item
Grand 7.6m (299 Inch) Delft Student Corps Parade ? Rare 1878 Leporello This rare and visually striking leporello depicts the costumed parade of the Delft Student Corps held on 9 July 1878, commemorating the entry of Willem VI, Duke of Bavaria and Count of Holland, Zeeland, and Hainaut, into Utrecht in 1415. This exceptional lithographed leporello consists of 20 hand-coloured sections, extending to a total length of approximately 760 cm (7.6 meters), and measures 27 x 38 cm in closed oblong quarto format. The vivid scenes feature knights in full medieval regalia, heralds, foot soldiers, mounted noblemen, standard-bearers, and richly adorned horses, presented in sequential panels capturing the grandeur of the historical entry procession. Created by the lithographers Emrik and Binger of Haarlem, renowned for their high-quality colour lithography, this piece embodies the late 19th-century Dutch academic tradition of historical pageantry. It was produced as part of student festivities to honour both Dutch medieval history and national identity during the cultural renaissance of the 1870s. Its detailed depictions and bright period colouring remain highly appealing to collectors of student memorabilia, Delft history, Dutch costume, and parade illustrations. Condition summary: Fair to Good. Front board and first section detached, with a small tear. Some foxing throughout, particularly in blank margins, but overall the images remain crisp and vibrant, and the leporello folds securely. In good condition for its age and length. Framing tips: If displaying as individual scenes, mount selected panels in thin gilt frames with off-white mounts to enhance the period colours. Alternatively, a custom-made shadow box frame to show the accordion-fold presentation would create a dramatic wall statement in libraries, galleries, or historical interiors. Warm wood frames or deep walnut would harmonise well with the red, blue, and golden costume tones.
