The Grand Contrast, God And Man: Set Forth In An Epitome Of Holy Writ. With Reflections, And A Critical Examination Of Mr. Newman's Essay On “The Development Of Christian Doctrine”. By An Aged Layman I.E. R. Poole. Richard Poole argues that true Christian truth rests on divine revelation, as testified by Scripture and the apostolic witness, not on human schemes to develop doctrine. The work surveys biblical history from Israel’s kings and prophets through the Gospels and Acts, highlighting cycles of idolatry, judgment, exile, and prophetic promises of restoration, culminating in Christ and the spread of the gospel to the Gentiles. It contrasts the New Testament ministry of the Spirit with the old covenant and defends the unity and sufficiency of Scripture against theories of doctrinal development. Set against 19th?century Anglican–Catholic polemics, the book critiques Newman’s Development of Christian Doctrine, arguing that revelation, not historical elaboration, is the ultimate criterion of truth. It closes with a programmatic call to fidelity to apostolic testimony.
