Grande: The Desert Tortoise Who Found His Way

In the sun-baked suburbs of North Las Vegas, a family discovers a tiny desert tortoise nestled in a schoolyard landscape. Named Grande, this ancient creature becomes the catalyst for a profound transformation in the life of Kendall, an autistic teenager who finds a kindred spirit in the tortoise’s unhurried existence. While the world demands speed and constant social performance, Grande offers a different rhythm—one built on stillness, observation, and the language of presence. This book weaves together a moving memoir of interspecies friendship with a practical, authoritative guide to desert tortoise stewardship. From the technical engineering of thermal burrows and the complexities of winter brumation to the delicate ethics of protecting a threatened species, the book provides a masterclass in ecological responsibility. Ultimately, it is a meditation on what it means to truly belong. By following Grande’s lead, readers are invited to slow down, embrace the silence, and discover the 'tortoise pace'—a way of living that values deep attention over modern urgency.
