Grasshopper On My Shoulder (Paperback or Softback)

Before the shadows of "Diary of a Dangerous Mind," delve into the origins of Andy Killick, the enigmatic assassin whose deadly skills were forged in the fires of war. In "Grasshopper On My Shoulder," author Robin Horsham transports readers to the scorching deserts of the Gulf War, where young British soldier Andy Killick and his elite team receive a straightforward mission: assassinate an Iraqi Colonel named Rashid Aboo-Jaber.

What begins as a routine operation spirals into chaos when orders abruptly shift-capture the target alive and extract him from enemy territory. As alliances fracture and loyalties blur, Andy finds himself entangled in a web of international intrigue, political machinations, corporate greed, and unexpected bonds. Hunted across hostile sands by ruthless CIA agents and Iraqi forces, Andy must navigate betrayal, survival, and moral dilemmas that test the very core of his humanity.

Amid the relentless sandstorms, brutal combat, and high-stakes chases, Andy crosses paths with the Colonel's precocious daughter, Shamara-a bright, resilient child who becomes an unlikely ally and a symbol of innocence in a world of violence. As the lines between friend and foe dissolve, Andy uncovers a conspiracy involving counterfeit schemes, oil empire rebuilding contracts, and trillions in skimmed profits orchestrated by shadowy powers from Washington to Baghdad.

This gripping prequel reveals how a foster-care survivor, hardened by a lifetime of abuse and institutional neglect, transforms into a lethal operative. From tense sniper setups and explosive ambushes to heartfelt moments of camaraderie and redemption, Horsham masterfully blends pulse-pounding action with deep character exploration. Themes of trust, revenge, and the cost of war resonate throughout, as Andy grapples with his past traumas and questions his future beyond the battlefield.

Perfect for fans of military thrillers like those by Tom Clancy or Lee Child, "Grasshopper On My Shoulder" is a standalone tale that enriches the Andy Killick universe. Experience the untold beginnings: before Andy became a "dangerous mind," he was a soldier fighting not just for orders, but for survival, justice, and an improbable family forged in the crucible of conflict.
