A Gray Eye or So. In Three Volumes?Volume II

In the first volume, readers are introduced to Joan and her social milieu. Joan is portrayed as an independent and intelligent woman who does not easily conform to the expectations of her time. She possesses a "gray eye," which is a metaphor for her sharp, discerning nature and her ability to see through the superficialities of the society around her. Joan encounters various individuals, each representing different facets of society. Through her eyes, Moore critiques the social norms and constraints of the period, particularly those imposed on women. The narrative is both a romantic story and a social critique, as Joan's relationships and choices reflect the tensions between personal desires and societal pressures.
