The Great Depression : A History Just for Kids

It’s a cold November morning during the Great Depression. Before the sun rises, a line begins to form outside a kitchen offering hot coffee and doughnuts. For many, this will be the only warm meal of the day. After breakfast, men go out searching for work—any work they can find. At night, they return for a simple bowl of soup. This was daily life for millions of Americans during one of the hardest times in U.S. history.

This book introduces young readers to the causes, events, and everyday experiences of the Great Depression. From soup kitchens and dust storms to school life and family struggles, kids will learn what it was like to grow up during this difficult period.

Written for ages 7 to 12, the book provides an age-appropriate look at how the Great Depression shaped America—and how people, especially children, found ways to survive and stay hopeful.
