Synopsis

Great Masters of Cuban Art (1800-1958) chronicles the historical development of Cuban painting between. 1800 and 1958, using artworks from the Ramos Collection selected by the Museum of Arts and Sciences to create an international traveling exhibit. In addition to featuring an impressive assortment of paintings, this book also provides previously unpublished Cuban art history information, and examines how Cuban artists used typical personages, magical landscapes, musical scenes, religious practices, and rural and urban everyday life to depict a diverse society, with a clearly identifiable culture, from which emerged a distinct and exceptional cultural heritage. The exhibit is the first, both in breadth and magnitude, to travel in the United States since 1958, and the book contributes to the study of Cuban art, as it serves not only to document the different genres and artistic styles. that developed in Cuban painting during the colonial. and republican eras, but also to identify the historic contributions of Cuban artists to the dissemination and blossoming of the arts in Cuba.
