The Greatest Recovery Stories Never Told

In The Greatest Recovery Stories Never Told, addiction medicine physician Dr. David M. Novick brings readers inside a world rarely seen—and even more rarely discussed: the lives of people who have achieved long-term recovery from opioid addiction using methadone and buprenorphine, the FDA-approved medications proven to save lives.

Told largely in the voices of those who lived them, these deeply human, often heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful stories reveal what recovery truly looks like when stigma is stripped away. The individuals featured in this book were once written off as hopeless. Today, they are working, raising families, contributing to their communities, and living full, meaningful lives.

Drawing on more than four decades of clinical experience, Dr. Novick weaves together:

• Powerful, first-person recovery stories

• Clear, accessible medical explanations of addiction and treatment

• Evidence-based insights that dismantle common myths about “substituting one drug for another”

• A compassionate call to rethink how society, medicine, and families understand recovery

This book is not just for clinicians or policymakers. It is for:

• People struggling with opioid addiction

• Families desperate for real answers

• Healthcare providers and educators

• Advocates seeking to end stigma

• Anyone who believes recovery should be defined by health, stability, and life regained

At a time when the opioid crisis continues to claim tens of thousands of lives each year, The Greatest Recovery Stories Never Told offers something rare: truth, dignity, and hope grounded in science.
