The Greek, the Friar, and the Heroine (Paperback)

Paperback. The Greek, the Friar, and the Heroine is an intellectual journey through the ideas that helped shape Western civilization - from Aristotle's defense of reason and reality, through Thomas Aquinas's recovery of Aristotelian thought, to Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism.Roberto Rachewsky combines philosophy, history, political reflection, and personal testimony to examine the long struggle between reason and mysticism, individualism and collectivism, freedom and coercion. He also turns his attention to Brazil, exploring the country's delayed encounter with Enlightenment ideas, the cultural roots of its political contradictions, and the emergence of the liberal movement that sought to challenge Brazil's statist tradition. With clarity and conviction, the author presents Objectivism not merely as a political position, but as a complete philosophy for living on earth: a philosophy of reality, reason, self-interest, capitalism, and the pursuit of happiness. This book is both an introduction and a manifesto. It invites the reader to revisit the foundations of modern civilization, understand the moral roots of liberty, and recognize the role of the independent, productive individual in building a peaceful, prosperous, and truly civilizing revolution.
