About this Item
255 x 160 mm. (10 x 6 1/4"). 11 volumes. Pleasing dark green quarter morocco over brown mottled paper boards by C. Hardy (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), raised bands, spines attractively gilt in compartments with central floral spray, volute cornerpieces, gilt lettering, corners tipped with green vellum, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Volume I with an engraved bust of Euripides. Large Paper Copies. Euripides: Dibdin I, 539; Schweiger I, 116; Lowndes I, 759. Terentius: Dibdin II, 481; Lowndes IV, 4606. â Extremities just slightly rubbed, occasional faint foxing, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE SET with few signs of use, the bindings opening with reluctance and making an appealing appearance on the shelf, and the interior clean, fresh, and bright. Printed on fine paper and within extremely ample margins, this is a very attractive set embracing the works of two giants of classical drama. Although a scholar not easily impressed, Dibdin resorts to all capitals in praising our nine-volume Euripides as "one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL, MOST ACCURATE, and MOST COPIOUS and COMPLETE editions of an ancient popular classic," and further declares that "copies on Large Paper [as here] may be ranked among the finest ornaments of a classical collection." This "splendid publication" contains, in his opinion, "the purest text of each play," accompanied by "scholia of a very valuable description" and "the prefaces that are prefixed to the best editions of the single plays." Dibdin concludes that "the immense body of matter contained in this edition (a large portion of which was never before made public), will be found to be clearly and methodically arranged, so as, in fact, to comprise every thing that the student and the admirer of Eurpides can desire." The uniformly bound printing of Terence's comedies also won approval from the great bibliographer, who declared it an "excellent edition" that is "beautifully and accurately printed." Fortunately for us, few of our set's previous owners have taken advantage of the treasure trove of classical scholarship available to them--perhaps happy just to admire the gilt spines on their shelves.
