From The Greeks To Darwin: An Outline Of The Development Of The Evolution Idea

How did a handful of daring Greek thinkers set in motion the idea that would culminate in Darwin's revolution? Ideas evolve before science itself. In From The Greeks To Darwin, eminent palaeontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn traces the history of evolution ideas from ancient Greek philosophy origins through the great naturalists of the Enlightenment to the nineteenth century evolutionary science of Charles Darwin and his contemporaries. Clear, concise and quietly dramatic, this classic evolution theory history unfolds as a story of changing minds: from speculative Greek philosophy and evolution, through pre-Darwin evolutionary theories, to the rigorous evidence that transformed biology and reshaped modern thought. Ideal as an engaging history of science book and as an evolution theory reference book, it speaks to readers who want both narrative sweep and intellectual depth. Osborn stands at the crossroads of science and culture, and his lucid survey of the origins of evolutionary thought doubles as a rich work of Darwinism intellectual history, illuminating how ideas about nature, time and change emerged and collided long before they settled into textbook form. Accessible yet authoritative, it suits curious general readers, evolution history for students, and anyone engaged in Charles Darwin evolution studies, while rewarding scholars and classic-literature collectors alike.
