The Green Carnation

The Green Carnation is a novel written by R. S. Hichens that was first published in 1894. The book tells the story of two young men, Esm Amarinth and Lord Reginald Hastings, who are both part of the fashionable and artistic circles of late Victorian London. Esm is a flamboyant and eccentric writer who wears a green carnation in his buttonhole, and Lord Reginald is a more reserved and conservative aristocrat. The two men become friends and spend a lot of time together, attending parties and social events. However, their friendship is complicated by their differing attitudes towards love and relationships. Esm is openly gay and has a number of affairs with other men, while Lord Reginald is more conventional and believes in the importance of marriage and family. As the novel progresses, Esm's lifestyle and behavior become more and more scandalous, and Lord Reginald struggles to reconcile his feelings for his friend with his own beliefs and values. The novel is a satirical commentary on the decadence and excess of the late Victorian era, and explores themes of homosexuality, morality, and social class. The Green Carnation was a controversial book when it was first published, and was widely criticized for its portrayal of homosexuality. However, it has since become a classic of queer literature and is considered an important work in the history of LGBTQ+ representation in literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
