About this title

Synopsis:

The Green Mountain State , Vermont, has all the ingredients to endear itself to railfans: mountainous terrain; rivers in steep valleys (many of which caused havoc for the railroads that ran in them); picturesque New England villages, structures and farms; shortlines; small locomotives; and short trains. Even the state s trunk lines (Central Vermont, Rutland, and St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain) were little more than small regionals. It is likely that Roy Campbell s visit to Vermont and Maine in August 1939 to see his two passions, steam railroading and sailaing, afflicted him with the bug, leading him to add Vermont photos to his collection. Enough photos exist for enthusiasts to explore and enjoy examples of the state s steam railroads. This book is organized into five parts: Central Vermont; Rutland; StJ&LC; Vermont shortlines; and bonus coverage of the few New Hampshire and Main standard gauge shortlines in the collection.
