First Rackham-illustrated edition, first issue printed on pink paper. Collating 205, [1, blank], [2, adv.]. Publisher's original blue cloth, front cover and spine blind-stamped in a conventional all-over patternand lettered in gilt. A color variant not noted by Riall or Latimore and Haskell. Title-page printed in red and black on white paper as issued. Eight full page color plates by Arthur Rackham. A Near Fine copy with just the lightest amount of rubbing to extremities and a few leaves with light creases at upper corners. Lady Greene was a prolific Irish children's author whose works emphasized moral life lessons. The present work was originally published in 1870 with the subtitle Buy the Truth and Sell It Not: A Tale for the Young; and it tells the simple and uplifting story of two boys who learn the Christian way toward generosity and goodness. Illustrated for the first time by Arthur Rackham, the present version of the story is brought to life in vivid, Pre-Raphaelite style. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century.
