1936 calendar for the Groceteria in Charles City, Iowa with artwork by Philip R. Goodwin. Cardstock sheet measures 7 ¾" x 15 ¾", tear-off calendar measures 2 ¼" x 4 ½" and tipped in artwork measures 5 ¼" x 9 ¼". Artwork is untitled but depicts a cowboy, his horse drinking from a river, and a packhorse behind him. Sheet has light creasing and coating of the cardstock on verso is torn (not affecting content), else very good. Philip R. Goodwin (September 16, 1881 - December 14, 1935) was an American commercial artist and illustrator known for his outdoor hunting and fishing scenes. He illustrated Jack London's Call of the Wild at the age of 22 in 1903. He sold his artwork to periodicals, publishers, and ammunition manufacturers, but was best known for his calendar art. Without exaggeration, it is safe to say most hunting cabins and lodges displayed Goodwin calendars. Ephemeral in nature, calendars often were thrown away at the new year hence it is difficult to find them in good condition. Goodwin's art slipped into obscurity after World War II only to be revived by the publication of Larry Len Peterson's masterful monograph "Philip R. Goodwin; America's Sporting and Wildlife Artist" published in 2001. Today, all forms of Goodwin art is collected and prized.
