About this Item
Reprint of the fifth edition (first published in 9 volumes in 1954, edited by Blom, and then reprinted in 1961 with the supplementary 10th volume, here included) Hardcovers. Original blue buckram cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Top edges slightly foxed, one small tear at the tail of a spine professionally repaired, otherwise very good. A clean, tight set, with no inscriptions or notations. An attractive set of 'the bible' of all things musical, begun by Sir George Grove in the late 1870s, in four volumes, subsequently revised and expanded under the editorships of J.A. Fuller-Maitland and H.C. Coles, and here in this 'modern' form by Eric Blom (1888-1959), an English critic, scholar, author and music lexicographer. Blom was Danish by descent, Swiss by birth, and British by choice, domicile and naturalization. He was the chief music critic for years, of "The Birmingham Post" and "The Manchester Guardian". Poignantly his obiturary appears here in the tenth volume supplement, since he died before completing it, that being done ably by the associate editor, Denis Stevens. The heavy set is not suitable for an overseas mailing, but can be done (economically) by surface/sea mail, untracked, for $65 US. Australian mailing will cost approximately $30.
