The book is an organized approach to understanding bone growth and disease. It integrates anatomic and radiologic knowledge of enchondral and membranous bone growth and emphasizes the similarities of the physis and acrophysis in development. While mainly written for trainees in radiology, pediatrics, and orthopedics, it will also be useful to practitioners in these fields. The artwork, jointly produced by artist and author, illustrates the concepts being promulgated. The identification of abnormality is aided by the explanations of the causes in terms of pattern recognition.

From the reviews:

"Prof. Oestreich’s goal was to share with the reader the expertise he has gained over many years of studying the growing skeleton. This primer is intended to acquaint the reader with all the conundrums that must be learnt and acquired before gaining expert diagnostic skill in this field. ... Given its price and the valuable information to be found in it, this book is warmly recommended for the libraries of radiology departments and the property of trainees in radiology and orthopaedics." (Giampiero Beluffi, La Radiologia Medica, Vol. 113, 2008)

"This is a short treatise, under 100 pages, by a paediatric radiologist ... . His book describes the various processes by which children’s bones grow, the parts of the bones which grow and what happens when the processes go awry. ... this is a lovely book that would be well received in any department of paediatric or musculoskeletal radiology. I could wish that every trainee would read this ... ." (Maeve McPhillips, RAD Magazine, January, 2009)
