Gus Shepard had not known the amazing story of his parents’ escape from the Korean peninsula. His father was a young US soldier tasked with smuggling a North Korean genius, Gus’s mother, out of the country. The journey was treacherous, and the scientist and soldier nearly didn’t make it.
