A nice two volume set containing essay contributions to the Guardian newspaper, which ran in the year 1713 and was founded by Richard Steele. 1831 edition.Complete two volume set, in a contemporary cloth binding.This is a wonderful collection of essays, which were published through the Guardian newspaper during its short run from March to October 1713. This publication was founded by Richard Steele, and featured contributions from writers such as Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope, and Ambrose Philips.Vol I includes the original dedication from the newspaper, with eighty-two of the newspaper publications. Essays include 'Letter on the Obsequium Catholicon, and Cures by it' by Alexander Pope, 'The Pineal Gland discovered' by Berkeley, and 'Of Courtship-Questions and Rules for' by Steele.Vol II includes one-hundred and seventy-five of the newspaper issues, including the final issue from the first of October. Essays include 'On Happiness-obstructed by Freethinkers' by Berkeley, 'The Court of Venus, from Claudian' by Eusden, and 'Account of the Terrible Club'.With a bookplate to the title page of Vol I and front endpaper of Vol II, belonging to Edward John Kenney (1924-2019). Kenney was a British Latinist and Kennedy Professor Latin, who was considered a leading expert on the work of Ovid Lucretius.Collated, complete. Bound in contemporary cloth. Externally, smart. Minimal bumping to the extremities and the spine, with light fading to the spine. A bit of cockling to the front board of Vol II. Rear hinge of Vol I is straining. Prior owner's bookplates to front endpaper of Vol II, and title page of Vol I. Half-title page of Vol I has been adhered to the paste down. Internally, firmly bound.
