Item description from seller

Hardcover, with dust jacket. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with white lettering to the spine. White dust jacket with illustrations of birds and purple and black lettering. Dated 1978 on copyright page. No date on title page. 424 pages. 53 color and black and white plates. Good condition. Binding is strong and square. Some light rubbing to the cloth at the edges of the boards. Pages are lightly toned, with some foxing to the edges. No marks or writing to be found. Dust jacket is lightly toned, with some shelf wear. No tears or creasing. A small label at the foot of the spine, with the number 10,614 written on it. We believe this is Tom Lovejoy's personal library inventory number. There is a signature on the half-title page. The names are hard to read, one of them appears to be from a "Billy". This could be signed by the author(s), but we aren't certain. "To Tom Lovejoy, with kindest regards and admiration- Billy and R[illegible] Feb. 10, 1979". This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term biological diversity to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. He died in 2021 and we are very excited to present a selection of his books. Please browse the entire catalogue here on ABE or contact us for instructions on how to get to it.
