Reviews
Two new books on sexual harassment on the job offer frank discussions on the origin and scope of the problem and outline practical suggestions for surviving in today's workplaces. The 9 to 5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment takes an anecdotal approach, recounting numerous examples of questionable behavior to define what is harassment and what is not. Authors Bravo and Cassedy, who are directors of 9 to 5, the National Association of Working Women, cover the role managers, unions, and employers should play in preventing harassment, and they devote a chapter to what to do if you are a victim of harassment. The advice in this book is basic, sometimes simplistic, but it is generally a good overview. Attorneys Petrocelli and Repa present a thorough treatment of the subject in Sexual Harassment on the Job , including clear analysis of the laws and court decisions on harassment. Sample anti-harassment policies appear, as do suggestions for developing training programs that sensitize workers to harassment issues. A good review of the available legal remedies and a 50-state survey of fair employment laws are useful. Nolo Press has once again taken a complex legal subject and made it accessible to laypersons.
