Synopsis:

Writing centers are places where writers work with each other in an effort to develop ideas, discover a thesis, overcome procrastination, create an outline, or revise a draft. Ultimately, writing centers help students become more effective writers. Visit any college or university in the United States and chances are there is a writing center available to students, staff, and community members. A Guide to Creating Student-Staffed Writing Centers, Grades 6-12 is a how-to and, ultimately, a why-to book for middle school and high school educators as well as for English/ language arts teacher candidates and their methods instructors. Writing centers support students and their busy teachers while emphasizing and supporting writing across the curriculum.

About the Author: Richard Kent is the director of the Maine Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and an associate professor of literacy and English Education at The University of Maine. A Guide to Creating Student-Staffed Writing Centers, Grades 6-12 was named the 2006 Book of the Year of the International Writing Centers Association, an assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English. Kent co-edited Teaching the Neglected "R": Rethinking Writing Instruction in the Secondary Classroom (2007) with Thomas Newkirk. He authored Beyond Room 109: Developing Independent Study Projects (2000); Room 109: The Promise of a Portfolio Classroom (1997); Play On! (1985), a young adult novel; Entering Weld (1981), a chapbook of poetry; and Writing About Place: A Teacher's Guide (2005), a guidebook that accompanies Our Maine: The Way Life Is, a CD. A long-time athletic coach, Kent recently published Writing on the Bus: Using Athletic Team Notebooks and Journals to Advance Learning and Performance in Sports as well as a series of companion books.
