You Seemed Fine: A Guide to Functioning (Sort of) (The You Tried Series)

Why is this so hard for me when it looks so easy for everyone else?

If you’ve ever asked yourself that question—even quietly—you are not alone.

Maybe you’ve spent your life looking capable while privately negotiating with yourself to answer one email, make one phone call, or leave the house. Maybe people describe you as “high-functioning,” “successful,” or “having it all together,” while you wonder why simply existing sometimes feels like a full-time job.

You Seemed Fine is for the people who became experts at looking okay.

Part memoir, part companion, and part affectionate roast of the modern self-help industry, this book explores what happens when the life you’ve carefully constructed no longer fits the person living it. Through deeply personal stories, absurd quizzes, fake diagnostic tests, reflection prompts, and enough sarcasm to make a wellness influencer file a formal complaint, this book explores burnout, perfectionism, late diagnosis, identity, productivity guilt, and the exhausting performance of appearing “fine.”

There is no twelve-step transformation waiting inside these pages. No miracle morning routine. No breathing technique that unlocks your hidden potential. No expensive online course with the word Masterclass in the title. There are, however, honest recollections, awkward moments, a few uncomfortable truths, and more than a few bad jokes. The kind of hard-earned observations many of us wish someone had shared years earlier. Plus, the growing suspicion that maybe we spend far too much of our lives trying to become people we were never meant to be.

You may laugh more than you expected. You may recognize yourself in places you weren’t expecting. You may even put the book down once or twice—not because it’s bad, but because it accidentally wandered into a room of your life you weren’t planning to visit today.

If that happens, take your time. The world has spent long enough telling people like us to hurry up, catch up, toughen up, and get our act together.

Maybe the goal was never to become someone else.

Maybe the goal was finally believing you didn’t need fixing in the first place.
