Stab-sewn pamphlet, the wrappers are leaves from the book The History of the Holy Bible that have been over-stamped in a checked pattern to cover the words. 14.5 x 9 cm, (5 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches), wrappers are worn, a bit dog-earred at the bottom right corner. 54 pages of text, counted and complete. Light foxing. Lacks the final free end paper (blank). Attributed to the English Puritan divine Samuel Hardy (1636-1691). It was first published in 1664. It went through 13 English editions over the next 130 years. Hardy was born at Frampton, Dorsetshire, and matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, in 1656, graduating with a B.A. in 1659. He was ejected from his pulpit at the Restoration for refusing the required oaths. He was accepted as a family chaplain and preached in Charminster, Dorsetshire, under circumstances that protected him from punishment by the Crown. In 1667 he was received as a preacher at Poole, Dorsetshire, where it is said he evinced strong character and influence. He remained there until investigated by a royal commission in 1682, which again ejected him from his pulpit, specifically for "not wearing the surplice and omitting the cross in baptism." He sought to preach privately, but continued to be harrassed for his views."He published, with his initials: 1. 'The Guide to Heaven;' second part, with title 'The Second Guide to Heaven,' 1687. Calamy speaks of it as 'suppos'd to be his,' and says it originally bore the title 'News from the Dead,' meaning 'the civilly dead nonconformists;' he questions 'whether any one book has been oftner printed or done more good than that little homely book." - DNB.
