What is unique about this new geographical reference source, containing nearly 8,000 entries, is that it has a lively writing style that resembles a weekly news magazine rather than an encyclopedia or a dictionary. Lavish photographs and charts are above average and sure to capture the interest of readers. The inclusion of man-made wonders such as skyscrapers and tunnels along with geographical features is a useful and unusual feature. ``Day in the Life'' vignettes of people around the world are also sprinkled throughout the book. Major countries receive from three to five pages of coverage and cities a paragraph or two. Historical coverage extends through late 1986.
