Item description from seller

COOPERSTOWN NEW YORK A GUIDE IN THE WILDERNESS BY WM. COOPER 1936. I am pleased to present for your consideration: “A Guide in the Wilderness; or the History of the First Settlement in the Western Counties of New York, with Useful Instructions to Future Settlers.” This booklet contains a series of letters addressed by Judge Cooper of Cooperstown to William Sampson, Barrister of New York. This book was first published in 1810 by Gilbert & Hodges of Dublin. It was subsequently printed again in 1897 with an Introduction by James Fenimore Cooper by George P. Humphrey of Rochester, New York. Here I am presenting the Third Printing by the Freeman’s Journal Company of Cooperstown, New York, dated April 1936. Judge Cooper or William Cooper was the father of James Fenimore Cooper. Please see the photo of the early paragraphs of the Introduction to this book which explains Judge Cooper’s role and involvement in land settling in what was seen as the “Western Counties” at the time. This small booklet (5 ½ x 8 ½ inches, 49 pages) is bound in stiff cardboard covers with a beige cloth spine. It opens with a frontispiece portrait of William (Judge) Cooper but there are no other illustrations. Condition: This booklet is in very good condition. The stiff board covers are generally clean with some darkening from normal handling along the leading edge. The rear boards also show some very minor soiling. The corners and spine tips are faintly bumped. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright without toning or foxing. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
