Synopsis
Drawing from the literature on international social work and the authors extensive and diverse experiences in this area, this book identifies and describes the necessary components of international placements to help programs not only maximize learning for the student, but also meet the requirements of the field curriculum and CSWE standards. It presents a well-developed process for dealing with critical issues that typically emerge when placing students abroad and factors that field programs should consider prior to committing resources for the establishment of international placements and student exchange programs. Sample forms and documents, ranging from model affiliation agreements with foreign universities to online seminar syllabi, are provided on a CD that accompanies the book.

Review
When I organized international placements, my students and I looked for a book such as this, but never found one. Guidebook to International Field Placements and Student Exchanges is an excellent resource for venturing into international placements in any professional field of practice. It discusses systematic strategies step-by-step and uniquely combines scholarly rigor and practice wisdom. Reading this book helps to prevent common pitfalls in international placements and return to a home country with meaningful experiences. I highly recommend it to all educators and students who are anticipating organizing and undertaking international placements. --Manohar Pawar, Professor, Charles Sturt University, Australia
This book provides a comprehensive guide for the process involved in conceptualizing, organizing, planning, managing, and implementing international field placements and exchanges. Issues examined range from models of exchanges to implementation, orientation, sustainability, and outcomes. The chapters are focused, well-researched, and presented with clarity and critical suggestions for classroom and field debate. Perhaps the most unique feature of the book is the question/answer section at the end of each chapter and the excerpts of student experiences which are liberally sprinkled throughout the book. These rich experiences provide a context for the readers to reflect and critically analyze their own experiences together with the textual material provided. ... This book ought to be used as a guide for field directors and staff in international programs. Students will also benefit significantly from the text as it provides them with knowledge and guidelines for organizing their placement abroad. I congratulate the authors on their work as the book contains descriptive and critical information on every aspect of international field placements and exchanges. --Narda Razack, Associate Dean, Faculty, York University, Toronto, Canada
