The Guild Cook Book

Octavo, cream boards lettered in black, [5], 145 pp, local ads. A Washington State community cookbook, printed by the pupils of the Washington School for the Deaf. The text prints a wide variety of recipes, including chile con carne, birnen brot (pear bread), wedding cake, Indian Village (for boys) and more. Each chapter contains a brief introduction with tips for preparing different kinds of dishes; the chapter on vegetables is prefaced by a half page on the "medicinal value of vegetables" ("Tomatoes rouse torpid liver.Lettuce has a soothing, quieting effect upon the nerves."). A five page chapter at the end provides recipes for the sick, including beef tea, cracker gruel, and "hints for the sick room". This copy also contains four pages of manuscript recipes on blank pages interleaving the text, including cheese souffle and mayo salad dressing. An excellent copy with slight toning to covers and pages, bit of foxing to front endpaper, owner inscription to front endpaper.
