Guldasta

What happens when we stop asking whether a belief is comforting—and start asking whether it is true?

Guldasta: Question Everything is a wide-ranging examination of faith, spirituality, tradition, caste, morality, and the human search for truth. Drawing on history, philosophy, psychology, science, social experience, and Indian intellectual traditions, Anoop Pachauri asks a deceptively simple question: what should we believe when tradition, authority, popularity, and personal experience point in different directions?

The book begins with spirituality and meditation, separating their demonstrable psychological benefits from claims about energy, miracles, enlightenment, and supernatural power. It then turns to religion's role in India's public life, examining caste, superstition, pseudoscience, fatalism, education, politics, corruption, gender discrimination, and the ways religious explanations can sometimes replace evidence and accountability.

The third part traces the historical development of morality, marriage, family, property, patriarchy, and social norms, asking whether institutions presented as timeless are actually products of changing human circumstances.

The final part confronts contradictions within Hindu society, including caste, competing scriptures, religious practices, astrology, pseudoscience, guru culture, and the possibility of reform.

This is not a book that asks the reader to replace one unquestioned belief with another. Its central invitation is more demanding: examine the claim, consider the evidence, understand the history, listen to opposing arguments, and decide for yourself.

For readers interested in critical thinking, Indian philosophy, religion and society, rationalism, secular inquiry, and the difficult relationship between faith and evidence, Guldasta is an invitation to question—not for the sake of doubt, but for the sake of truth.
