Illus.; photos, 7.75 x 5.25", cloth backed pict boards, 304pp, covers rubbed and browned, rear cover lightly stained, extremities bumped and worn, former owner's small bookplate inside front cover (with a Danish postage stamp with Riis' image), pp toned, but still a decent copy of this very important book. LAID-IN LOOSE IS A THREE PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY JACOB RIIS ON HIS LETTERHEAD, DATED APRIL 20, 1907. 10 x 8", folded once to make four panels, nicely penned, rear page top edge badly ripped, white-out marks along the top edges (some interfering with writing), folds, minor toning. To a Mr. Rhoades saying he cannot come to his son's church since ".I ought to be in retirement some where."; Riis discusses how much he charges for a lecture ($125), aging, etc. Both the book and the letter resting in a custom made blue slipcase.
