Preface and list of over 200 illustrations in front; 4 sections: Symoblism in Art; Legends and Stories Illustrated in Art; Legends of Place; and Ancient Myths which have been illustrated in Art. Pages tight; yellowed; moderate page wear; Some slight darkening along page margins, blank end paper, and title page; red page edges; some foxing on end pages; numerous b/w drawings and art illustrations throughout book with frontispiece, "Apalatro by Washington Allston (Drawing and Engraved by W Linton) and protective tissue. Black glossy pages inside front and back covers. Previous owner name on blank front end page. Brown hard covers with gild design on front cover. Covers have worn and rubbed spots along edges and corners. Some rubbing, spots and stains on front and back. Outer Spine has major part missing revealing underlining cardboard and cloth binding. String binding. Inner front spine crease is weakened and partically split, but pages intact. The section on legends of place have been principally drawn from German literature with English translations. The mythological potion embraces all subjects of that character which are illustrated in painting or sculpture in the galleries of Rome, Florence, the Louvre, Munich, Vienna, Dresden, and Berlin. The ilustrations are intended as a key or guide in the consideration of their subjects. The book is elegant-with the desire to make it compact and convenient as a handbook in travelling.
