Bookplate on front pastedown, occasional foxing, small closed tear in the text of leaf H3. Good. Second French edition of this important account of the explorations of De Soto in North America. First printed in French in 1670, after the original Spanish edition of 1605. "One of the major accounts of the travels of De Soto in Florida and throughout the present day Southeastern United States.the Inca's work remains the major literary by-product of this historic invasion" - Servies. The first edition of this work is generally recognized as the first published work by a native-born American author. Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca," a distinguished 16th century mestizo Peruvian and a descendant of the Spanish poet of the same name, was born in Peru and spent his formative years there, living out his later life in Spain. He is chiefly known for his history of the Incas, which was supposedly based on mestizo Jesuit Blas Valera's manuscripts, which Garcilaso de la Vega saved when Cadiz was sacked by the British.
