Nos trinta e três capítulos desta obra Richard Simon trata das origens e das características dos livros do Novo Testamento, com apreciações sobre as objecções dos judeus, das citações do Antigo Testamento que se encontram no Novo, da inspiração dos livros do Novo Testamento, onde refuta as opiniões de Espinosa, dos dialectos gregos em que foram escritos e dos principais manuscritos conhecidos na época. Richard Simon (Dieppe, 1638-1712) foi um padre da Congregação do Oratório, que se tornou célebre pelos seus estudos sobre o texto da Bíblia sendo autor de muitos livros sobre o Antigo Testamento (defendeu que Moisés não podia ser o autor de todo o Pentateuco) e sobre o Novo Testamento. Envolveu-se em violentas polémicas com protestantes, com católicos, como Bossuet em França. e com jansenistas tendo publicado estas obras sobre pseudónimo. Publicou uma tradução em francês da Bíblia. Throughout the 33 chapters of the work, Richard Simon approaches the origins and characteristics of the books composing the New Testament, assessing the objections of the Jews; the quotes of the Old Testament contained in the New Testament; the inspiration of the books in the NT, refuting Espinosa?s opinions; the Greek dialects in which the books were written and the main manuscripts that were known at the time. Richard Simon (Dieppe, 1638-1712) was a priest of the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, who became famous for his studies of the texts of the Bible. He is the author of many books on the Old Testament (he defended that Moses could not be the author of the whole Pentateuch) and on the New Testament. He got involved in serious controversies with Protestants and Catholics, like Bossuet in France and Jansenistics, having published his works under pseudonym. He published a French translation of the Bible. He got expelled of the Congregation of the Oratory in 1678 and some of his works were suppressed or forbidden.
