12mo, 7.25 in. x 4.25 in. Unpaginated. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Gilt title, seven pairs of band lines, and blind-stamped fleurons to spine. Marbled edges. Rubbing to marbled boards; light sunning to spine. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, with ink signature of another previous owner on bookplate. Two separate title pages. Pages supple and clean throughout. 1824 portion of publication has sixteen letters, comprising 478 sequentially numbered paragraphs. 1827 portion ("Part Second") has a 52 sequentially-numbered paragraph introduction, and then a lengthy (~150 pages) "List of the Abbeys, Priories, Nunneries, Hospitals and Other Religious Foundations, in England and Wales, and in Ireland, confiscated, seized on, or alienated, by the Protestant 'Reformation' Sovereigns and Parliaments." The bookplate is that of Robert Alexander Shafto Adair, 1st Baron Waveney, who was a British Liberal Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament for Cambridge for 8 of the years from 1847 to 1857. A leading liberal and president of the Ulster Reform Club, he unsuccessfully sought a peerage in 1869. On Gladstone's recommendation he was eventually enobled on 10 April 1873, taking the title Baron Waveney. In the 1860s and 1870s he published a number of pamphlets on the Church of Ireland and similar topics, and regarded himself as an expert on Italy. (from Dictionary of Irish Biography).
